Japan’s Christian culture is a unique and historically complex aspect of the nation’s religious landscape. Christianity was first introduced to Japan in 1549 by the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier, and it initially gained a strong following, especially among the samurai and peasants. However, in the early 17th century, the Tokugawa shogunate banned Christianity, leading to brutal persecutions and forcing many believers underground as “Kakure Kirishitan” (Hidden Christians). Despite centuries of suppression, Christianity persisted in small communities, and after Japan reopened to the world in the 19th century, it reemerged more openly. Today, though Christians make up less than 1% of Japan’s population, their influence can be seen in aspects of education, humanitarian work, and even cultural traditions. However, in a nation struggling with declining birth rates, rising secularism, and a lack of spiritual direction, Japan needs a Christian uprising—a revival that can bring faith, purpose, and hope to a society that has drifted from its moral foundations.
